Spring Trends 2019

I wish I could say that the weather was Spring like, but where I live in western Canada it’s still frigidly cold. However, I still like to plan for the seasons and talking about warmer weather helps me feel better about it. Also with spring 2019 being so full of colour, it’s easier to inject doses of colour into your wardrobe even in colder temperatures.

After reading various magazines and blogs about the Spring trends. I  have to say I’m quite inspired.

Being a thrifter I get excited when I see trends that can easily be found second hand.

Here are a few trends I plan on trying and a few I’ll probably skip lol!

1. Lavender

light purple , lavender, lilac, whatever you call it is a spring staple. It reminds me of Spring and pairs well with neutrals like grey and khaki and also looks lovely with yellow or pink

2. Neons

I have to admit I was a little on the fence on this one. Growing up right in the middle of the 1980’s where neon tackiness prevailed I think it can be made classy in small doses such as shoes or accessories or if you find a pretty top, skirt , pants or dress, be sure to pair it with black or white, denim  or some other neutral for a more updated use of neons.

3. Zebra

Again a trend i’m a bit on the fence about. But with other animal prints, using it in small doses can be fun, shoes, belts, a bag, a scarf? Or if you can find a nicely tailored jacket or blouse, why not try it out

4. Polkadots

I have to say I’m super happy that polkadots are still in style. You can’t help but smile when wearing them.  They are also super easy to find in the thrift store in many colours and sizes. They always inject an element of fun into any outfit!!

5. Bright orange

I personally have always been a fan of orange or it’s close cousin coral.  As you know, Living Coral is 2019’s Pantone colour of the year!! It looks so lovely paired with turquoise or aqua accessories! Again a colour that exudes happiness!!

Now for a few trends I’ll probably skip! Lol!

1. Bike Shorts

I know celebs like Kim K has rocked them with a blazer. Call me old fashioned but I believe bike shorts belong in the gym or bike riding. Those of us who don’t have the most toned or thin legs might not be able to quite pull this look off,  each to his own though. 😂

2. Feathers

Not really those most practical of material for everyday wear. I could see bits of it on formal wear but again can’t really see it being something I would wear on a regular basis.

Those are my picks for Spring 2019 and I know there are many more. I hope you found some inspiration for your Spring wardrobe 🌸

In love with Henkaa Convertible Dresses

3ACD2A73-6D14-4A13-9DFE-4ECFE2E9A70B.jpegI  am excited to share a recent collaboration with a proudly  Canadian company 🇨🇦called Henkaa.  They make beautiful convertible dresses. The most exciting part of Henkaa dresses is you are not only getting a “dress” but you are getting “dresses” there are so many different ways of styling these dresses.  It’s amazing how many looks you can create with one dress.  For myself if I find I have a lot of formal events to attend it can get costly to buy a new dress for every occasion.  I also loved the fact that depending on what neckline you choose you can change up your jewelry such as statement necklaces and earrings.   Also because of the fabric of the dress could be worn in all seasons by adjusting the sleeve length and straps or perhaps by adding different shoes or hosiery.

I also love what Henkaa stands for as being inclusive to all sizes and shapes.  Sometimes it can be daunting to find formal wear especially for a more curvy figure.  My daughter who is about a size 10 was able to style the dress just as nicely as I could at a size 18.  Also not having to wear shapewear such as Spanx is a bonus. The nice stretchy fabric is forgiving  allows for a comfortable fit.  The fabric can be folded and gathered to hide a multitude of flaws. henkaa4

The versatility of this dress has to be noted.  I had so much fun creating different looks with this dress and so easy to do.  Henkaa has a great series of videos on YouTube that very clearly show how to create different looks.

The dress I  am wearing above is called the Sakura in ruby red  and the pictures above are only a few ways the dress can be worn.  Check out the YouTube video Tutorials on how to style the dress.

Please be sure to check out the beautiful  dresses at Henkaa, they are so lovely and come in many styles and colours. Perfect for weddings, graduations or any special occasion. The wrinkle free fabric is also perfect for packing and travel!

Let’s Talk about Love

So I had the idea for this blog post a couple of days ago. It’s not quite what you think it might be. I’m not talking about romantic love necessarily. I’ve had a year on my own to reflect on my own life.  This may be a cliche but I’ve come to the realization that I’m responsible for my own happiness.  Even when I was happily married Valentine’s Day was never just about roses and chocolates. My life  has always been about embracing those people and things that I love. I’ve become more and more convinced that true happiness comes from falling in love with your own life. I know this is easier said than done. There are plenty of barriers to happiness.  Money, stress, depression, anxiety, fear of the future, and outright exhaustion can get in the way of a happy life.   Believe me when I say that I worry and deal with all of these things on a daily basis.  I am happy to say though,  it’s getting easier for me to pull myself out of my rut by focussing on what I love. I try to spend quality time with my friends and family. I try not to feel guilty when I rest or overeat or have a lazy day. I find joy in small things like cooking a great meal or decorating my place for the holidays. Whatever it is that makes you happy, do it!!  This past Christmas was my first on my own. I’m not going to say it was perfect but it certainly helped me see what really mattered to me and getting lots of “stuff” wasn’t one of the them. Simple pleasures like making homemade gifts, baking, lighting a yummy scented candle and watching my favourite movie even if it was by myself. I’m  not going to say I don’t have dark days because I certainly do, I just try to distract myself so I can get motivated to do the things I love

So do me a favour, this Valentines Day, don’t hate it for being alone or don’t hate it when your partner forgets to get you a card or flowers. Try to think about  what you love about your life, even if it’s one small thing!   💗💓💕

I never thought I’d enjoy time by myself but I now find that I love my solitude.  I’m slowly learning to fall in love with my life. Just remember that there is always something to be grateful for, you just have to look for it sometimes 💗❤️

XOXO, Lynda

I was motivated to make some DIY beauty products when I was  recently reading the ingredients in some of the products I’ve been using. I saw a lot of scary, harsh chemicals that can’t be good for your skin. I decided there must be something better so I did some research.

I decided to try my hand at making a super easy foaming facewash. It has the most lovely combination of essential oils.  This face wash has a combination of lavender, rosemary and frankincense, combined with jojoba oil and Castile baby soap. These essential oils are known for clearing up the skin. I was amazed to read all of the benefits that have for the skin. I wish I would have discovered them earlier, better late than never.

Frankincense essential oil is a powerful astringent, meaning it helps protect skincells. It can be used to help reduce acne blemishes, the appearance of large pores, prevent wrinkles, and it even helps lift and tighten skin to naturally slow signs of aging.

The nutrients of rosemary can help protect skin cells from damage often caused by the sun and free radicals. Since rosemary has natural antiseptic properties, it’s a superior disinfectant for our skin and hair. In fact, this essential oil is known to promote a healthy, moisturized scalp and reverse premature graying.

Lavender oil helps reduce redness, blotchy patches, and acne scarring. Lavender oil’s anti-inflammatory properties make it great for soothing and healing skin that’s irritated or reddened from the sun, insect bites, or bacteria.

Jojoba oil has anti-inflammatory properties which help to tame chaffing and chapping, reduce redness caused by drying, ease the effects of eczema and rosacea, and keep skin calm and comfortable. The Vitamin E and B-complex vitamins in the Jojoba oil help in skin repair and damage control.

Castile soap naturally possesses antibacterial properties. Just like it’s perfect to use on skin that suffers from eczema, it’s also good for people who suffer from psoriasis or acne. The soap contains natural antibacterial properties that will help kill the bacteria that causes acne

I was able to find the foaming  pump bottles  at the dollar store but you can also order them online on sites like Amazon. I found the cute stick on letters at the dollar store as well

I can’t wait to try it out myself. The ingredients such as the essential oils are relatively inexpensive when you think about how many bottles of face wash you can make with the ingredients. I was able to get all of the ingredients at my local grocery store and they were even on sale!

The next product I made was Lavender linen spray. I absolutely love it! I’ve received some as a gift  and it really do help for a restful sleep. Just spray it on your pillowcase or duvet or even in the air.   When I discovered how it as to make I wasted no time making it.

Researchers have  monitored  sleep cycles with brain scans and found that lavender increased slow-wave sleep, instrumental for slowing heartbeat and relaxing muscles. … Lavender essential oil offers calming and soothing properties that can help reduce stress.

I paired these two lovely DIY products with a few store bought items including bath bombs, charcoal infused washing puffs, hair turban and shower caps. I also plan on adding some essential oils to some Epsom salts in some pretty jars with ribbon.

I arranged all of these items in a cute wire basket which will be perfect for storing in the bathroom.  I hope this post motivates you to try making your own beauty products! Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas 🎄

Happy 3rd Blogiversary

Processed with MOLDIV

So it occurred to me the other day that 3 years today I started my blog!  I started this blog as a creative outlet to share my ideas about fashion, home decor, cooking and lifestyle. For years before “blogging” became a thing I was always interested in fashion, crafts and anything creative in general. As a child I was constantly drawing the outfits my favourite celebrities wore and sewing outfits for my dolls! As I got older I continued to be being inspired by celebrities and magazines.  Years later I still get giddy over fashion and decor and cooking.   I was probably one of the few 20 something females who had a subscription to Martha Stewart magazine! The creative process has always kept my juices flowing.  I’ve come to love thrifting and home decor just as much as fashion. It’s all about learning something new!   The 3 years I’ve had on my blog have allowed me to share my creativity and lately it’s been a great therapeutic outlet for me as I’ve become more comfortable sharing some of my personal challenges. I hope to continue to share what inspires me and I am grateful and happy to have this outlet!  I appreciate all of you who take the time to read my blog! Thanks again for your support!

Thrifting for the Holidays

Thrifting for the holiday….wait what??

Over the years I often get asked a great way to give creative gifts on a budget and I answer in one word… “thrifting”

Now I am not suggesting you run down to your local thrift store and buy Aunt Ethel’s old slippers and nightgown as a 🎁 😂but I do have some tips on what kinds of things I look for in the thrift shop when I’m holiday shopping!

Here we go:

  1. Baskets:1EB9DDE9-11AC-4016-8A9D-56D826A3C172                                   You can get some beautiful and inexpensive baskets in all shapes and sizes!  They’re perfect for awkward shaped gifts, they are eco friendly and pretty too! Add a bit of ribbon and cellophane and you’re good to go. I love making food or themed baskets. When you’re only spending a few dollars on the basket that leaves more $ for what goes inside
  2. Jars:

The same  concept here, fill it with your favourite cookie mix, bath items or even candy and gift cards. Pretty jars can be expensive so why not pick up some pretty vintage ones at a fraction of the cost.

  3. Sweaters :     30A2C006-ED72-4D25-9B5B-9C0D3F0D350E91B88683-FC82-4EB9-87C8-2F0B61B965B5EBA5E38F-7DA1-412A-AC00-2080EC08FD4FBE26419F-E545-4025-BF62-780E2FC5E1E3                          Sweaters  are my favourite thing to craft with and give as gifts.  You can make adorable pillows, patchwork quilts, coffee cozy or even a homemade pair of mittens. Pick a nice chunky knit or opt for a luxurious cashmere or wool. The colours and styles are endless and the size doesn’t matter as you’re cutting them up anyway.
  4. Vintage Jewelry:     E898E9CA-FAA7-4311-90AA-65F963D1E987.jpeg            You  can find amazing vintage and high quality pieces and better yet they have a history!  They might need a little polishing but what a lovely thing to gift something one of a kind for someone you love!!
  5. Vintage dishes and glassware.     25E979BC-F539-4037-A2CA-0594F332CE46.jpegSo you’re tasked with bringing dessert to a holiday party. Why not put it on a lovely vintage crystal plate or dish that the hostess can keep!  A lot prettier than an ugly Tupperware container or paper plate.

I hope these ideas gave you inspiration in your gift giving this season. Trust me when I say that your friends and family will truly appreciate the creativity and time you spent to give them a thoughtful and heartfelt gift

Merry Christmas and an amazing holiday season to you and your loved ones ❤️

My Review of Monat hair products

modat3.JPGHi Everyone

I have been meaning to blog about this in quite a long time after a fellow Instagrammer, Pam (pamalovely)  was kind enough to send me some products for me to try.

I have to say, I have never thought I had nice hair.  It tends to be thin and fine and barely holds a curl.  Many of you know that over the last several years I have let my hair go completely grey.  I feel my hair is healthier as a whole but feels coarse sometimes.

I was pleasantly surprised by these products.  I used the Renew Shampoo and Revitalize conditioner.   I love the fresh citrus scent.  I have very hard water in my area so I was grateful for Pamela letting me know that I only needed a small amount added to very wet hair.  It did lather quite well despite using a very small dime sized amount.

When I started using these products, I hadn’t had my hair cut in a long time so I felt my hair was dry and flyaway.  I noticed right away after using it that my hair was nicely smooth.
I haven’t worn my hair straight in ages and I was pleasantly surprised one day after using the blow-out cream my hair felt very smooth and shiny

Sometimes I find that grey hair can look dull and I noticed that my natural highlights seemed to be brought out using these products.  I also strangely felt like I had more hair.  Like I said, I have had thin, fine hair my whole life so this was a new and exciting feeling for me.

My favorite product by far is the blow-out cream.  I worked it into my slightly damp shampooed hair and the pleasant citrus scent is amazing.  I find it gives my hair so much body and shine.  I feel like it is protecting my hair from the heat damage so I don’t feel as guilty blow-drying everyday.    I also used the hairspray as well and again the lovely scent and the soft hold was great.

I found I was wearing my hair back so much because I didn’t like what it looked like straight so here is a before picture of my hair for your reference

I feel my hair looks thinner in the above picture in comparison.   The great thing also is my hair also seems to hold a curl much better too which I love.  The blow-out cream is perfect for days I also want to curl it.

On the whole I would definitely recommend the Monat products as they definitely added body and shine to my thin and fine hair.

Thrifting a Fall Capsule Wardrobe for $50

Hi everyone! I hope everyone had a great summer! It’s that time again! Pumpkin 🎃 spice, blanket scarf, boots and sweater weather! I guess I’m not overly original when I say that I love fall and cooler weather.  The truth of the matter is that I don’t really have much choice  given the climate I live in western Canada pretty much dictates that. We’re barely out of August  and the leaves 🍁🍂 have already started changing! Wow 😮 you say! Here’s the proof!

So anyone who knows me knows that I am a huge thrifter and a big bargain shopper. I pride myself in putting together stylish outfits on a budget. There is really no other way I could possibly afford all the clothes and shoes I own if I wasn’t budget conscious.

That being said I’ve always thought that more is more rather than less is more. However, I have to say since downsizing to less closet space this year,  I’ve shifted my mindset considerably.  I recently purged my closet and donated 13 massive bags of clothing and shoes. Once the dust settled I realized that what I had left were pieces that worked together.  I can’t say I thought of this idea 💡 but I realized that I definately could create a capsule wardrobe or several capsule wardrobes with what I had left! 👢👗👚👕👖

What is a capsule wardrobe you ask? By definition it’s a grouping of clothing and accessories in a certain colour scheme. This would typically involve choosing one or two base colours that go with everything, such as black, white, brown, grey, or navy. Items such as pants, tops, skirts that would be bought in shades of these colours, so that they can be put with anything else in the wardrobe. After choosing the base colours, choose one or two accent colours, which are brighter than the base colours, and co-ordinate with each other. These would typically be used for items such as tops, skirts , or accessories; once a colour scheme is established, all the items in a wardrobe should be interchangeable, as the colour of the pieces always coordinate.

So I’ll show you what I used to create my capsule wardrobe. I have 10 pieces of clothing. What you choose could vary depending on your personal style and climate  I chose 10 mix and match pieces which  include:

1 pair of jeans, I pair of leggings, 1 pencil skirt, 1 printed  top, 1 sweater, 1 leather jacket, 1 light coloured jacket, 1 pair of booties, 1 pair of knee high boots and 1 blanket scarf for a total of 10 pieces and I only paid $50 for all of it! I shopped on sale days at my favourite thrift store and was able to get everything you see here!❤️

You by no means have to shop for these exact pieces for your capsule wardrobe. Shop the colours and styles you like!! For example if you’re not a fan of red, substitute it for some other colour you like. Or maybe you’d prefer black boots instead of brown or maybe you hate plaid and you’d prefer polkadots, the choice is yours !

So basically you can see that everthing I choose coordinates . In this capsule wardrobe I have black, cream, brown, burgundy. I could have easily added one more colour but this was how it worked out.  It’s amazing that these 10 pieces can create an infinite number of possibilities on how to style these pieces. Here’s a few below. These are by no means all the looks you can create by changing which top, bottom or footwear you can get many different looks!

So as you can see it’s kind of a no brainer, you can literally get dressed in the dark and you’ll still look great! Lol 😂

I hope this blog post gave you a little inspiration on how you can create your own capsule wardrobe ❤️

8BEDC776-DF87-422C-863D-E2B1747E2344This is probably the most real blog post that I’ve done in years.  As of January 2018 my life has changed. For 30 years my life was all about a long time marriage, teenaged kids, a decent job and  a pretty decent quality of life.  It didn’t occur to me what would happen if I ever found myself single again. Now 7 months later here I am.  I am a  48 year old woman still adjusting to her new life which feels strangely like starting out as a naive twenty-something minus the toned body and the carefree attitude! 😏 The online illusion of a perfect and happy life is kind of normal these days. No one really knows what goes on unless you’re willing to disclose it. At the beginning of my new single life I felt free. I had a credit card I used to give me the illusion that nothing had changed, there was so need to change my quality of life. I thought wow, this isn’t so bad.  Fast forward 7 months later, that same freedom 48 credit card makes my life miserable. The debt and the interest is killing me. Paying cash for everything is a cruel experiment that everyone needs to try.  😂 It’s humbling when your 19 year old daughter knows more about budgeting than you do 😂. Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful.   I always thought I had an ok job until I was faced with the expense of paying my own rent, phone, car, insurance, groceries, it’s been an eye opener. Let’s not even talk about online dating. The internet didn’t even exist the last time I was single! 🤣 I’m not suggesting I’m living in poverty I have a roof over my head and a job but it’s not easy.  I fell upon instagram by accident in an effort to keep an eye on my teenagers. Little did I know several years later and 9000 followers that I might be called an influencer? public figure of some kind? I like to think I’m just a girl who likes to share what she likes and others seem to like that? 😆.  In my mind I’m a middle-aged  woman who likes to thrift and who thrives on creativity.  Despite appearances, I live a normal life, I don’t get paid to blog or post on Instagram but not saying that would be something I’d turn down if the opportunity was there. Truthfully.  some weeks I’m running low on toilet paper and groceries. Frankly it can be damn depressing at times. I guess the point of this blog post is to reinforce that despite how perfect our online life may appear, the real story may be a huge departure from what appears in the meticulously edited pictures online. We all have our own struggles in life and the story you want to tell is up to you, I’m ok with being an open book.  I’ve been very open about my stuggle with anxiety and depression. It’s something I’ve dealt with my whole adult life, it’s part of who I am.  If it helps someone else knowing that they are not alone, that makes me happy.  I know that I’m very grateful of the continuing support that I’ve received from others. I know that I may not quite be where I would have liked to be at this point in my life but I’m well on my way on road to happiness despite stumbling along the way ❤️ xo Lynda

A few years ago I posted about making a diy kimono. Years later I still love them and this time tried my hand at making a longer one made with a super long scarf.  I love quick and easy diys! And this one is super easy even if you’re not an avid sewer

The beauty of the “fashion kimono” is that their design elements are essentially the same. They are several rectangles sewn together. Beautifully simplistic!

You can make them out of anything, scarves, old sari fabric( I get mine at thrift stores) even stretch knit or fleece fabrics for cooler weather and no seams to finish!!! It’s so inexpensive to buy fabric or scarves at a thrift store or reinvent something you already have!

This time I found a super long scarf for $3.00 at the thrift store! I followed the same steps and made this long kimono! I love how it turned out

Here are some simple instructions

So as you can see!! It couldn’t be easier!!! Happy sewing!
